Three Mighty Men

I was reading in 1 Chronicles 11:15-19 about the three mighty men, and David was in a hold.
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem. And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD. And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
I came away from this passage of scripture asking questions. I like when a scripture makes me ponder!
Here are a few of those questions; you might even have a few of your own.
One of those questions was this. Was David testing the men?
David said “Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem”. Was David testing their loyalty to him, after all when in battle, sometimes you don’t know if the friendly fire is worse than the enemies’ fire?
Second question: Why did David not drink the water?
These men risk their lives to give him what he had asked for? I thought more about this scripture throughout the day, and the question poised to me was “Do you know what it feels like to go through the trouble to help someone out? And after you help them, like David’s drink of water, they pour you out on the dirt.
I know personally from experience, it hurts. The pain is real, no matter how you look at it whether the pain was caused by a loved one, a pastor, or co- worker, loyalty is not an easy find, and David went through enough to know that if these men were for him, then he would pour it out, and thank the Lord for their loyalty to him.
Like I said, Loyalty is not an easy find, so there might be times in our lives that we will have to go through the trouble to help someone get a drink of water, even when it’s painful, even when they look at you and pour it out, but the pain that you will feel is the test of loyalty unto the Lord, who will promote you as a mighty man or women of God.
If you read the scripture they were called the three mighty men after these things.
